1. Boil 500ml of water in a pot.
2. Adjust the amount of water if necessary according to your preferred sauce consistency.
3. Add Korean chili paste (gochujang), a few slices of scallions, and minced garlic to the boiling water. Stir well until the paste dissolves.
4. Once the sauce is well mixed and comes back to a boil, add the rice cake (tteok).
5. Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the rice cake is tender and the sauce has thickened.
6. If you wish, you can add fish cake (eomuk), boiled egg or cabbage during cooking.
7. Adjust the flavor by adding malt syrup or sugar to taste to balance the spice with a touch of sweetness.
8. Serve hot, garnished with sesame seeds or more chopped spring onions if preferred.
